As I've mentioned, the Fairfax newspapers policy of requiring registration to view content, and what's more paying to view stuff on their database of articles is a pain in the behind.

Influential journalism commentator Steve Outing reckons that the trend towards free content will be immutable.  What's more, sites requiring registration and payment are shutting themselves off from a large segment of the online consumer market, and hence advertising exposure for paid advertising space.  He's done a riff on a New York Times article about this here.

I hope that the Fairfax powers that be take note.
